Sunyani, July 7, GNA - The Electoral Commission has assured the two candidates contesting in Saturdays national delegates congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of a transparent, free, fair and credible elections.
The more than 3000 delegates of the NDC are trooping to Sunyani to choose between the incumbent President, John Evans Atta Mills and former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, who would be the flagbearer of the party in the 2012 general Election.
Mr George Gyabaah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of the EC, who gave the assurance in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday, said the EC would do its best to ensure that the election was devoid of any malpractices.
The Regional Director asserted that they were up to the task because, 93this is not the first time its conducting and supervising such an election", adding that, since it was a family affair there was the need for all supporters of the two candidates to exercise restraint and comport themselves to ensure an incident free election.
Mr Gyabaah said voting materials, including voting screens, ballot boxes, indelible inks, as well as thumbprint and stamp pads, were all available for a successful election.
He said a team from the commission's headquarters in Accra would arrive in Sunyani on Saturday morning with the ballot papers.
The Regional Director said each candidate would be allowed to provide two agents each at the six voting centres, at the Sunyani Coronation Park. They would also monitor the elections and counting processes to guard against any malpractices.
"Apart from the 12 agents, no one would be allowed to go closer to the voting centres", Mr Gyabaah added.
