Parliamentary candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Madina constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu says the Electoral Commission (EC) has demonstrated that it is fast becoming a lawless institution after the election management body allegedly went ahead to organise a workshop meant to plan for the voters' registration exercise despite an injunction on the said workshop.

The injunction was secured by MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George to stop the EC from any form of gathering since the government’s ban on social gathering is still in place as part of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Some members of the NDC, led by Sam George over the weekend gathered at the City Escape Hotel in Accra after it was alleged that the workshop was being held EC at the facility.

The NDC has subsequently reported the matter to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police to probe the matter.

Commenting on the matter, Francis-Xavier Sosu told Blessed Sogah on Class 91.3 FM’s State of the Nation programme on Wednesday, 29 April 2020 that the EC needs to have public confidence in order to organise smooth and peaceful polls in December “and so, trying to play smart and to circumvent the law only goes to talk about how lawless the institution is becoming, an institution that needs to have public confidence.”

He added: “So the point is that the EC must know that it is accountable to the people, the EC is accountable to the people and whatever the EC does must be in the interest of the people and I don’t think being lawless and flouting court orders and court judgment is in the interest of the people because it doesn’t promote what we know as the rule of law”.
