EC fixes date for Fomena by-election

Accra, Dec. 12, GNA - The Electoral Commission (EC) has fixed Tuesday, January 23, 2007 for the by-election in the Fomena Constituency in the Ashanti Region following the death of Mr Akawsi Afrifa, Member of Parliament.

A statement in Accra signed by Dr Kwadwo Afari-Djan, Chairman of the EC, said candidates should file their nomination papers on January 4 and January 5 2007.

The statement said: "Notice is hereby given that nomination of candidates shall take place at the office of the Returning Officer, Fomean Constituency, on Thursday, 4th January and Friday 5th January 2007 between the hours of 0900 hours and 1200 noon and 1400 hours and 1700 hours."

The EC has issued a writ to the Returning Officer of the Fomena Constituency on Monday, December 11 for the filing of nominations. It directed interested candidates to obtain nomination forms from the Returning Officer at the District Office of the Electoral Commission at the Constituency.

Every nomination should be proposed and seconded by two registered voters and supported by 18 other registered voters from the Constituency with the consent of the prospective candidate.

The candidates are also expected submit two passport-sized photographs in colour with red background; pay a 500,000-cedi fee in bankers' draft and submit the nomination papers to the Returning Officer.
