The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has reacted to a viral video of allegations of illegal voter transfers going on in some parts of the country.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 15, 2024, which was sighted by GhanaWeb, the commission stated that the allegations being made in the said video are not true.

It stated that the voter transfer exercise ended on July 5, 2024, and the equipment for the exercise have been even deactivated.

“The Commission has taken note of two videos circulating on social media, depicting two women purporting to be members of a Political Party. Both women falsely accuse the Commission of registering voters and undertaking a Transfer of Votes Exercise. The Commission states categorically that both allegations are FALSE.

“It is obvious that this calculated mischief is aimed at tarnishing the image of the Commission and causing disaffection for the Commission in the lead up to the General Election in December 2024,” part of the statement reads.

It added, “For the information of the Public, the Commission concluded the 2024 Limited Voter Registration Exercise on the 29th of May, 2024. The Application for the Transfer of Votes ended on the 14th of June, 2024, but was reopened for students in Public Universities, Prisoners, as well as personnel of the Security Agencies from Wednesday 3rd July, to Friday 5th July, 2024. Indeed, all the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits used for the Transfer for students were deactivated after the Exercise. Therefore, they could not have been used to register voters or undertake transfers as alleged by the two in the video.”

The EC also indicated that those who could be heard making the allegation in the video did not present any evidence to back their dangerous allegations, which hamper the country’s democratic processes.

It called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter and bring the persons responsible for spreading the falsehood to book.
