The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will from next month, roll out a new pre-payment metering system in all communities in its Ashanti East operational area.
The new meters known as Enersmart Split Pre-payment Metering, would replace existing meters in homes, offices, shops and factories.
The Project Manager, Engineer David Asamoah, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that it had already been piloted in the Asokwa District of the Company in Kumasi.
He said about 68,000 pieces of the meters had been procured and ready to be installed.
The new pre-paid meters have intelligence system which allows both the customer and the company to access information and to communicate freely at their convenience.
He said the other unique feature of the new meter is that it has anti-tampering mechanism, which records and reports any tampering with the system as well as a safety device to check correct wiring of the premises before it could be activated.
Mr Asamoah said customers would now know the exact amount of electricity they buy or consume at any point in time, something that would help them to budget and manage their electricity consumption.
He said the other high point is that it would aid the ECG to manage debt, broadcast messages to customers and gather customer information from the offices of the company.
“Given the advancement in technology, the company could not continue to do things the same old way and needs to introduce changes to improve the quality of service to customers and block revenue leakages, Mr Asamoah added.
He appealed to customers to pay their bills promptly to enable the company to generate enough resources for efficient operation.
