The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng has urged residents of Accra, especially those in earthquake-prone areas, not to be alarmed by Sunday's earth tremors, saying they are a natural phenomenon which man can do very little about.

Prof Frimpong Boateng nonetheless advised residents to make sure they use quality building materials to ensure the safety and sanctity of their buildings.

Earth tremors hit parts of the capital city on Sunday, 9 November 2018.

The areas affected included Weija, Gbawe and McCarthy Hills.

The ripples were felt at Anyaa, Dansoman, Lapaz and their environs.

Speaking to the media in Parliament on Monday, 10 December 2018, Prof Frimpong Boateng, who said he experienced the tremors, too, said: “There is nothing you can do about this”, adding:

“You have to obey the building code and do whatever you do to make your building earthquake-proof, but nobody can predict earthquakes and when they will come and the magnitude of the earthquake, so, we have to go on living our lives and trust that God will continue to protect us as he has done for millions of years.”
