The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex King Nartey, has provided details about the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two individuals after their car was burned to ashes in East Legon.

Eyewitness reports suggested that fire service personnel arrived at the scene very late, after significant damage had already been done, despite several calls for swift assistance when the fire started.

In response to the delays on Onua FM on Monday, October 14, 2024, Alex Nartey revealed that the absence of a fire station in East Legon was a major factor contributing to their delay.

He explained that fire service personnel had to commute from Madina to the scene, and by the time they arrived, the victims had been burned to ashes.

“We had information of a road accident at East Legon. We always complain of inadequate fire stations in the country and we need them for situations that occur.  We do not have any fire station along the East Legon - Trassacco stretch.

“We had to dispatch a team from Madina to the scene. By the time we got there, the cars and its occupants had burnt beyond recognition,” he said.

Speaking on how the other occupants of the vehicle got burnt, he explained that the impact of the crash got the two burned victims stuck inside the car.

According to him, they were strapped in a seat belt which made it impossible for people to facilitate their rescue on time.

“The impact of the accident caused the Jaguar to go under the Artura, causing the latter to crumble. There were four people in the vehicle [Artura] and two of them in the front seat were rescued. The two other occupants were strapped in a seat belt at the backseat, making it impossible for their rescue.”

Alex Nartey further provided an update on the current status of the survivors, stating that one of the rescued victims from the Artura vehicle has been discharged.

According to him, preliminary investigations have established that the accident was due to overspeeding.

Meanwhile, CCTV footage shared online showed a speeding vehicle on a main road approaching a junction, where it crashed into another vehicle ahead of it.

One of the vehicles crashed into a wooden electric pole, causing the cables to fall off, which reportedly started the fire.
