The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) has expressed support for former President John Dramani Mahama's recent pledge to abolish the current teacher licensure examination and integrate the licensing process into the final year examinations for teacher trainees.
This commitment was made during the launch of the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) 2024 manifesto at the University of Education, Winneba.
William Boadi, Executive Director of EAI, commended Mahama for addressing what he referred to as a long-standing issue that has plagued teacher trainees since the licensure exam's introduction in 2018.
“This has been long overdue and EAI supports this initiative of which we will remind Mahama should he win the election,” he said in a statement.
According to Boadi, the current system, although well-intentioned to ensure the quality of educators, has been marred by flawed implementation. As a result, many qualified teacher trainees who have successfully passed the licensure exams remain unemployed due to bureaucratic hurdles.
EAI has long advocated for this reform, arguing that integrating the licensing process into the final year examinations would alleviate the challenges faced by trainees.
Boadi emphasized that Mahama’s promise must be more than political rhetoric, urging the next administration to deliver on this pledge if the NDC wins the upcoming election.
