Effutu Assembly welcomes sister-city delegation

Winneba, (C/R) May 5, GNA - The Effutu Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the local Sister City Commission on Wednesday welcomed the 13-member Sister-City delegation from the USA, which is on a six-day visit, with a dinner reception. The delegation, led by Mayor David Norris, Mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia, is made up educationists, businessmen and women, estate developers, medical practitioners, journalists and librarians.

The visit is a follow up to a memorandum signed last year the Charlottesville City and the Effutu Municipal Assembly to exchange programmes of mutual interest.

Speaking at the reception, Mayor Norris said their visit would also enable them to study the possibility of constructing a modern community library complex for the area and join the people to celebrate their Aboakyer festival.

He expressed the hope that the people would contribute their quota towards the successful execution of programme. The Municipal Chief Executive for Effutu Municipality, Nii Ephraim, in his address, gave the assurance that the Assembly would work hard to achieve the goals set in the memorandum. He said the Assembly was looking for their support to develop the two major festivals in Winneba - the Masqueraders festival and the Deer Hunting (Aboakyer) festivals' into tourist attractions. The Reverend Eldad Bonney, Presiding Member of the Assembly, expressed the hope that the relationship with Charlottesville would achieve mutual benefits to the partners.

The Vice Chancellor of University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, who chaired the programme, said the library idea is laudable and the project would boost teaching and learning in the area.
