Ekumfi Essuehia (C/R), April 29, GNA - The chiefs and people of Ekumfi Traditional Area have held a grand durbar in honour of Prof. Kwesi Akwansah Andam, Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for his contributions towards the development of education in the area.
Prof. Andam, who hails from the area, was enstooled "Nwomasuahene" (chief of academics).
The occasion also coincided with the launch of the Ekumfi Education Fund, which yielded 92 million cedis to support brilliant but needy children in their education.
A citation presented to the Vice Chancellor commended him for establishing a library in his hometown, Ekumfi Attakwa and for providing a double decker bus for conveying pupils from schools in the area to and from the library.
He was also commended for sponsoring students of the university in various ways during their recess and teaching in junior secondary schools in the traditional area, a programme, which had contributed immensely to raising standard in the schools.
The citation described him as a man of many parts a science scholar, a poet and a prolific writer with 83 books to his credit, a preacher of the gospel, a philanthropist and a peacemaker who has contributed to the resolution of many chieftaincy disputes in the traditional area.
Mr Kwamina Amoasi-Andoh, Chairman of the durbar planning committee expressed the hope that the youth would draw inspiration from Prof. Andam's academic achievements and contributions he has made to the development of education in Ekumfi.
Mr. Robert Quainoo-Arthur, Mfantseman District Chief Executive announced that a large proportion of the assembly's share of the common fund and HIPC fund had gone into improving educational structures and the sponsoring of needy students in second cycle and tertiary institutions.
Mrs. Comfort Owusu, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman East urged parents to help teachers to help their children by providing the teachers with incentive packages.
Nana Paul Sagoe, Tufuhene of the traditional area called on the citizens to unite to develop the area.
Prof. Andam thanked the chiefs and people for the honour done him and pledged his continued support to the development of education in the area. 29 April 04
