Former Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has stated that Ghana's 2020 election, which declared President Akufo-Addo the winner, should have proceeded to a second round.

Speaking on the Citizen Show on Accra100.5FM live from Tamale, where the NDC will launch their campaign on Saturday, July 27, 2024, Mr. Ankrah expressed optimism about the NDC regaining power in the upcoming December polls.

He told show host Nana Ama Agyarko, “In 2020, NPP made lots of promises and claimed they won the 2016 elections by one million votes, but after only four years, where we had 106 parliamentary seats, we gained and had 137. We even believe it was 142 and they stole five seats, but we even got a speaker of parliament from our side. We reduced their so-called one million votes massively, and I know in 2020 we should have gone into a second round because of the data we had. But because they knew that as a governing party going into the second round, you’ll lose, like it happened in 2008 under NPP, they didn’t want that and that’s why Jean Mensa helped them rig the elections.”

Mr. Ankrah warned that any attempts to rig this year’s election will be resisted, regardless of whether the perpetrators are police officers or soldiers.
