Security Analyst Adib Saani has condemned the violent attacks on some state institutions by aggrieved individuals, following the conclusion of the 2024 general elections.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Saani expressed concern about the disturbing trend of lawlessness and violence directed at state institutions and some political figures following the election of a new president and party into power.

According to him, these incidents are a result of public institutions being politicised. He explained that these state institutions are being managed by individuals with political affiliations, which makes the institutions they represent targets for attacks.

“Let me condemn what is happening in no uncertain terms. It is repulsive, disgusting, lawless, and criminal, however, it is not the first time. In 2016, some besieged the Tema Port, Toll booths, Tamale Teaching Hospital, and toilet facilities. It has become a norm and it is very unfortunate because a civilised society doesn’t behave that way,” he said.

Adib Saani, the Executive Director of the Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace Building, also stated that individuals with the necessary skill sets to lead these institutions are often overlooked and sidelined, while unqualified political figures are appointed instead, turning the institutions into political fields.

He noted that individuals who voice concerns about these troubling developments often become targets of unfair treatment.

“As a criminal researcher, I have taken the trouble to go beyond the emotions to get to the bottom and understand scientifically what the issue is. What would make people act in the manner they are doing today? I've realised that what is happening is as a result of the politicisation of technocratic public institutions that are supposed to be manned by technocrats with special skills.”

He added, “A lot of state institutions are complaining. The airports, ministries departments, and agencies to the special public service organisations are complaining that once you are seen as belonging to the other political party, you are reduced to a second-class citizen. Some of them complain about being arbitrarily posted.”
