Empower The People With Education To Fight Poverty - Sulemana

Walewale (N/R) Oct. 22, GNA - The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Walewale Constituency in the Northern Region, Mr Nabilla Sulemana has said that widespread poverty in the area could be fought more effectively through the development of education. With good education the people would be empowered with knowledge and skills to enable them to earn a good living, Mr Sulemana told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Walewale.

The Parliamentary Candidate, therefore, expressed his determination to make the promotion of education in the constituency his priority if elected to Parliament in the December polls.

He noted that during the past four years there had been an unprecedented increase in the number of new schools established throughout the area, and that the next logical step would be to ensure the availability of qualified teachers to man those schools.

To this end, he intended to lobby Parliament and the nongovernmental organisations (NGO) to establish a teacher training college in the West Mamprusi District to produce professional teachers in adequate number to improve educational standards in the area. Mr Sulemana, who is the Headmaster of the Nalerigu Senior Secondary School, underscored the importance of middle-level manpower development in the economic development of the area, and pledged to seek NGO assistance to make the Walewale Vocational Training Institute a first-class facility with modern equipment for the training of young school leavers in various vocations.

He further made known his plan to promote all-year-round farming in the area through the provision of irrigation dams similar to those at Tono and Vea in the Upper East Region, to fight rural poverty. The Candidate said he would also advocate for a review in the mode of distribution of the poverty alleviation fund to ensure that it benefited more people from the rural communities.
