Enthusiasm to vote explains high turn up in registration-Agbesi

Dededo, Aug 6, GNA- A re-awakened enthusiasm among Ghanaians to vote in the 2008 Election probably explains why many people are rushing to register in the ongoing re-opening voters registration exercise. Mr Felix Agbesi, Registration Officer at the Dededo Registration Centre told the Ghana News Agency GNA on Wednesday.

He said the 10-day event targeted mainly those who had attained between 18 and 20 years since the last voter registration exercise attracted many people who were far older than those targeted. Mr Agbesi indicated that many of the much older people who called to register said they did not register to vote in the previous years because it not bring any benefit to voters.

He said civic education in the communities change their minds of such people to register this time.

Mr Agbesi said intermittent shortages of materials had not held back the process as new supplies were often sent with dispatch. He said low battery performance of the cameras also created delays but commended party agents and the Dededo community for hiring a generator at their own cost to charge those batteries. About 79 people had been registered when the GNA got to the centre about 1030 hours on Wednesday.
