Eurobond cash is a waste - Chairman Wontumi

The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has said that there is the likelihood that the $1bn Eurobond cash issued to Ghana, like many other funds, will be misappropriated on bloated contracts and siphoned into private pockets of NDC government officials and their cronies.

According to him, recent revelations of corrupt practices in the country gives no hope to the ordinary Ghanaian that the money shall be used to better living standards of the citizenry.

He made the statement at the inauguration of Friends of Nana Akufo-Addo (FONAA) USA branch, in the United States of America over the weekend.

The ceremony which was well attended by top level party functionaries to formally outdoor the group as one of the numerous entities with the objective of mobilizing support within the United States for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s bid to ascend the presidency of Ghana in 2017.

Making a statement at the launch, Chairman Wontumi cited some recent gargantuan revelations of corruption in the country as evident of the fact that NDC government functionaries do not have the interest of the country at heart and they are ready to go every length to “steal” the nation’s meager resources to enrich themselves and their families.

He has, therefore, appealed to the various anti-corruption and monitoring agencies both within and outside Ghana to keep an eagle eye on the government’s expenditure, and stop it from reckless spending.

“Failure to implement the necessary checks and balances, Ghana as a country shall be doomed and the proceeds from the Eurobond shall be recklessly spent like how allocation for the World Cup were done,” Chairman Wontumi added.

The NPP scribe was quick to caution the NDC government not to see the subscription of the bond as a sign of confidence in the deteriorating economy, but rather a sign that Ghana is offering bigger interests and returns on peoples (Eurobond subscribers) investments, which shall be re-paid over time, adding that such a situation can be a good basis for Ghana’s economic downgrading in future

Touching on the recent Cholera menace in the country, Chairman Wontumi advised government to institute a sanitation facility Loan Scheme to offer assistance to homeowners to put up toilet facilities in their homes to reduce the effect of the disease associated with open defecation and haphazard disposal of fecal waste in public gutters and drains.

Such a facility, Chairman Wontumi said, could be revolving in nature so that several thousands of people can benefit, and the facility paid back to the scheme between 2-3 years at regular installment intervals.

Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako finally described President Mahama’s style of governance as typical of an African local Champion who only takes delight in pleasing onlookers to attract attention and gain “fans” but eventually end up failing the given task.

He added that the NPP under the abled leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has what it takes in terms of expertise to industrialize the country, generate enough jobs and create sustainable wealth for generations to come.
