The governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) spokesperson on Gender and Social Protection, Ama Serwah Nerquaye-Tetteh, has reassured Ghanaians that the party will collaborate with businesses to provide shelters for victims of gender-based violence. According to her, every citizen, including women, deserves to feel safe and protected.

Speaking on the Campaign Trail segment on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, she stressed the need to ensure safety for all Ghanaians.

“It is essential that every Ghanaian can go about their daily activities without fear. Every Ghanaian must be protected, and that includes women,” she said.

She further noted the particular forms of violence targeted at women and affirmed that the NPP would address these issues.

“There are specific types of violence directed at women, and we are committed to tackling these challenges,” she added.

Nerquaye-Tetteh clarified that providing protection for vulnerable groups, especially women, should not be seen as offering special treatment but as necessary support.

“We need to recognize that certain groups are more vulnerable, and it’s essential to offer the required help. A lot has already been done through institutions like the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and Social Welfare,” she explained.

She also emphasized the establishment of shelters designed to support all vulnerable groups, including women and children.

“These shelters will provide a safe haven for those at risk, ensuring that no one feels left out,” she stated.

She also noted that many women affected by gender-based violence may not have the resources to access legal support, which is where Legal Aid will play a crucial role.

“Legal Aid will ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of financial status, feels safe and protected,” she said.
