Madam Mavis Asante, a palm nut seller at the Agbogbloshie Market in Accra, confidently challenges her schoolmates who believe they are more successful than she is.

In an interview with GhanaWeb TV's Everyday People program, Mavis shared her journey of becoming a palm nut seller.

She explained why she believes she can do everything her schoolmates are doing.

According to Mavis, she has come to realize that nowadays, there's no difference between those who have attended school and those selling in the market, as both can equally present themselves at events.

She believes that in today's world, market women can do everything that educated people can.

“One thing I've come to understand is that once you start working, you can achieve what someone who has attended school does. These days, there's no distinction between the market and school. When there's an event, you can attend and present yourself just like an educated person. There's no pressure at all.”

Mavis also revealed that selling was never her dream growing up, but financial difficulties led her to take up her mother's business.

Although she completed her education at the senior high school level, she aspired to be a government worker, specifically a secretary or a nurse.

Unfortunately, these dreams couldn't materialize due to her parents' financial struggles.

Mavis has been in the palm nut-selling business for nearly six years.

“My mother got me into this business. She would travel to other regions to get the items, and I would assist her. Now, with her gone, I'm the one running it.

As a child, I dreamed of attending school and working as a government employee. I never wanted to sell, but circumstances led me here. I aimed to become a secretary or a nurse after finishing senior high school, but due to financial difficulties, my parents couldn't support me,” she told GhanaWeb's Victoria Kyei Baffour.
