Former Chief of Staff under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration, Kwadwo Mpiani, has revealed that members of the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government became sycophantic during their tenure.

According to him, they remained silent even when things were going wrong, failing to speak truth to power.

Mpiani attributes this to the concentration of power in the hands of one individual within the political party. He explained that, in an attempt to stay in the leader's good books, members avoided raising concerns or pointing out issues.

“What’s even more worrying,” he noted, “is that people who could speak up were treated as outcasts and labeled as individuals who disliked the government or the president.”

He elaborated, “Unfortunately for the party and government, when you express concerns, you become an outcast because they think you don’t like the president or the government; that’s why you’re behaving that way.

"From there, we moved into government—government with executive powers more powerful than a party leader. One would have thought that, at that stage, we would sit up and be cautious about our actions. But it got to a point where we almost became sycophants. We knew things were not going well, but we allowed them to continue.”

Mpiani shared these insights during an interview on Good Morning Ghana.
