Ex-seaman jailed for fraud

A 56-year-old ex-seaman has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for defrauding by false pretense.

Peter Yawson, who appeared before the Tarkwa Circuit Court was convicted on his own plea.

Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector Edward Paddy told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that the complainant, Daniel Armo, is an illegal miner who resides at Nsueam and the convict who claimed to be a spiritualist lives at Daboase near Sekondi in the Western Region.

He said last year, Peter approached the complainant and collected GHc2,000 with the promise of buying materials to perform rituals for him to get more gold from his illegal mining site at Kaniakor in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality.

After the convict collected the money, he disappeared and efforts made by the complainant to trace his whereabouts proved futile.

According to the Prosecutor, on April 4, the convict was involved in a similar fraud case and he was arrested in his hideout at Dompim-number-one near Daboase, and was brought to Nsueam.

He said the complainant upon hearing of Peter’s arrest went to the police station and identified him as the one who defrauded him.
