Exclusive: Rawlings joins NDC campaign

RadioXYZonline.com can confirm that former President Rawlings has decided to join the campaign trail of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The former President, who has been at loggerheads with the leadership of the party since 2009, last month indicated that it was not likely he would join the campaign for either the NDC or his wife’s party, the National Democratic Party (NDP).

At a meeting with the flagbearer of the NPP last month, Mr. Rawlings said “I may not be very active on the campaign trail so you can be rest assured."

The Special Aide to former President Rawlings, Kofi Adams, also told Radio Ghana in October that the NDC has lost track of the core values it was founded on and unless the party comes back on track Mr. Rawlings will not campaign in the December elections.

Mr. Rawlings, founder of the NDC, has consistently slammed the late President Mills for looking on while the NDC’s philosophy of probity and accountability were fed to the dogs.

But at a meeting with senior members of the party on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Rawlings said he has decided to participate in the campaign of the NDC after witnessing some changes under the leadership of President John Mahama.

Reliable sources in the office of the former president said the matter was discussed extensively before the decision was arrived at.

It is not clear what his allegiance will be to the NDP now, but his wife, flagbearer of the NDP on Tuesday, told Ghanaians to vote out the NDC government because of what she believed to be the growing rate of corruption in the country.
