Ghana’s biggest opposition party, NDC, today June 10, 2020, marked its 28 years anniversary.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the party on Wednesday morning held a Flag Raising Ceremony at its headquarters at Adabraka in Accra.

Leading the ceremony, Leader, and Flagbearer of the party, Former President John Dramani Mahama said over the last 28 years, the party has done its bit to contribute enormously and has lived by its principle of Social Democracy, towards the development of Ghana.

“On the occasion of the 28th anniversary, on your behalf as faithful servants of this party, I send very warm felicitations and appreciation to all our forebears led by our Founder and former President of the Republic of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings, for birthing the NDC,” he said.

Founded by former President Jerry John Rawlings, the NDC was birthed out of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) which ruled Ghana following the military coup d'état on 31 December 1981 led by Mr. Rawlings.

Ahead of the 1992 presidential elections, the NDC was formed and won the 1992 elections making Mr. Rawlings President. He subsequently won the 1996 general elections and finished an 8-year tenure after which his party lost power to the New Patriotic Party in the 2000 elections.

The NDC has, however, since the 2000 elections won three elections with the late Professor John Evans Atta-Mills and Former President John Mahama serving as presidents on the party’s ticket.

Ahead of the 2020 elections former Mahama and his NDC is seeking a comeback at the nation's presidency after having been endorsed as the party’s candidate for the election in December.
