Fact Check: Bawumia’s #DroptheHypocrisy list questionable

Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia set Ghanaians into a state of discussion after comparing his government’s achievements to that of the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In starting his own hashtag, he began the #DroptheHypocrisy listing many achievements of the Akufo-Addo government on his Facebook page.

The said post, he said, was aimed at exposing members of the NDC who took to the streets to embark on a demonstration dubbed “Kum Yen Preko”.

Dr. Bawumia posted a compilation of some promises fulfilled by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), while also highlighting, in equal measure, what he termed as failures of the erstwhile NDC administration.

But YEN.com.gh fact checking of the Veep's claims make the list very questionable.

He talked about the introduction of Free SHS policy and the subsidization of fertilizer for Ghanaian farmers by the NPP and opined all of these were not present during John Mahama's tenure.

Our verdict and checks indicate that Free SHS was available in certain parts of the country, specifically the north and also day SHS students did not pay fees. Also the NDC government provided free fertilizers for farmers.

He also touched on the introduction of the Nations Builders Corps (NABCO) to reduce graduate unemployment, but Dr. Bawumia's claim that the NDC created no program or avenue to employ graduates is false.

The Mahama administration had GYEEDA and YEA, a government programe which provided jobs for graduates as well.

Another claim on the vice president's list YEN is contesting is "the complete eradication of ‘dumsor’ as achievements of the NPP".

The current government cannot say they have eradicated dumsor because Ghanaians still experience erratic power outages.
