Fake ECG official on fraud spree to supply meters

A man, who posed as an employee of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and defrauded two men of a total of three million cedis for the supply of electricity meters has been granted 15 million cedis bail with sureties to be justified by the Tema Circuit Court "A".

Foster Zanes, who pleaded guilty in the two separate cases is to re-appear at a later date.

Mr. Charles Asiedu, the presiding judge ordered him to pay the three million cedis before the next adjournment date. The prosecution said he had paid 1.5 million cedis of the amount.

Inspector Sarah Acquah told the court that in the first case, the accused who heard that Mr. Prosper Amoah a driver, needed a meter in his house approached him in May 2002 that he (accused) could supply him and demanded 1.5 million cedis which was paid to him.

The prosecution said after collecting the amount, the accused went into hiding, until March 17, 2003, when Mr. Amoah spotted him in Ashaiman town and reported the case to police who arrested him.

In his caution statement to the police, he admitted collecting the amount.

Inspector Acquah said in the second case, Mr Alhassan Issah, who fell victim to Zanes' tricks on March 4, this year by applying the same tactics and collected 1.5 million cedis identified him when the Ashaiman police arrested him.
