Farmer kills himself over wife refusal to spend Christmas with him

Elubo (W/R) Dec. 24, GNA – The apparent refusal of a woman to join her husband to celebrate Christmas at their cottage on a farm near Elubo in the Western has ended up in tragedy – the 48-year-old man has shot himself dead last Thursday.

The Jomoro District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Ferguson Dzineku, made the known to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Half Assini on Thursday.

The Police Commander said the deceased, Yaw Asamoah and his wife whose name is being withheld for security reasons, had been married for 18 years at Elubo. He said the couple had spent most of their time at their Patase cottage, near Elubo, adding that the woman had been seeking divorce because the marriage was facing financial difficulties.

The Police Commander said as a result the woman left the man at the cottage and came to her parents at Elubo town.

DSP Dzineku said on December 22, 2011 Asamoah sent their 15-year-old boy to ask his mother to join him to celebrate Christmas on the farm.

He said when the women received the message, she told their son to tell his father to come to Elubo for the celebration of Christmas.

DSP Dzineku said while the deceased and his son were returning to Elubo on foot from their cottage at about 1900 hours he told the boy that he had forgotten his mobile phone at the cottage and was returning to take it. He therefore told the boy to go ahead to Elubo.

The Police Commander said when the man was not showing up, the boy went back to the cottage only to find his father in pool of blood with a gunshot wound at his throat and his single barrel gun beside him.

His body has been deposited at the Half Assini government hospital mortuary for post-mortem while police investigations continue.
