Farmer petitions government to enforce law on noise-making

Techimantia (B/A), Sept. 3, GNA - A farmer at Techimantia in Tano South District of Brong Ahafo has called for the strict enforcement of the law against noise-making to ensure the peace of his household, and the education of children in the area. In a copy of a petition to President John Evans Atta Mills made available to the Ghana News Agency, Mr. M. O. Addo, also known as Barimankwa, alleged that the activities of two persons, namely Kwabena Agyei and Kwame Boateng had been a nuisance to him and his household for the past 10 years.

He said efforts by relevant agencies and personalities including the District Chief Executive, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and Assembly members in the area to resolve the issue had not yielded any fruitful results. "Kwabena Agyei and Kwame Boateng have taken me and my household for a ride simply because I am poor and do not wield any authority. They have closed a street in between my premises and another house to obstruct the free movement of people and have turned the area into a drinking bar and a dance hall amid the blasting of loud music," he said. Mr. Addo said what was more disturbing was that, the situation attracted drug addicts and the loud music and noise made by the revellers could not allow children in the area to study at home or have any decent sleep.

This, he said, often made attendance to school the next day difficult for children. Mr Addo said officials of the EPA, NCCE and the District Town Planning Officer at Bechem have all described the area as not suitable for that activity and the enforcement of an order for the two men to stop operating there will rectify the situation. The petition was copied to the Regional Minister, EPA, NCCE, Inspector General of Police, District Police Commander and the District Chief Executive, and the media, among others.
