Farmers advised to cultivate new maize variety

Bonsu (B/A), Aug 3, GNA - Nana Kwadwo Seinti, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, on Tuesday advised farmers in the region to cultivate "Mamaba", quality-protein hybrid maize, developed by the Crops Research Institute. He said the variety could yield about 70 bags of grain per Hectare as against the low yield of 20-30 bags obtained from the local varieties.

Nana Seinti who was addressing about 70 farmers at a farmers "Field Day" at Bonsu in the Techiman municipality, said cultivation of the hybrid would enhance food security and improve the standard of living of the people. Technoserve, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), in collaboration with the International Centre for Soil Fertility and Agricultural Development (IFDC), CRI and Ministry of Food and Agriculture organized the Day.

Mr Victor Antwi, Client Director of the NGO, said the farmers were advised on farm management and had access to effective marketing and financial linkages to enable them to become more efficient.
