Fashion Designers blamed for indecent dresses

Kumasi, Aug. 28, GNA - A Business Executive has attributed the proliferation of indecent and provocative dress make-ups mainly to the doings of local fashion designers and beauticians and not foreigners as perceived in certain circles.

Mr. Opoku Agyemang Prempeh, Managing Director of Lakayana Company, a Revenue Generation and Debt collection firm who made the attribution, said in their quest for huge profits, local designers research into foreign fashionable magazines for all manners of styles and designs, and end up convincing their customers to accept such designs. Mr. Prempeh made the observation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi on Saturday, on what accounted for the spread of provocative dressing and how best the trend could be checked. He said as part of measures to help reduce the trend, it was imperative for the Association of Fashion Designers and Beauticians not to only embark on education of their members but to convince them to avoid designing such dresses.

Mr. Prempeh said the perception that the customers often insisted on such designs was untenable, since being a professional, the designer owes it a moral duty to counsel the customer to accept similar styles that go to promote decency and the Ghanaian culture.

He also appealed to authorities of Tertiary Institutions to take a more serious view about indecent dressing on campus, and strive to come out with more stringent regulations to check it and ensure that such regulations are fully implemented.

They should also set up counselling centres to advice students on good morals and decent dressing, he added.
