People of Kwabenya are still in a state of shock and gripped with fear following an attack on personnel at the District Police Station by some unknown armed men.
The residents in an interview with GhanaWeb disclosed that after the incident, they no longer feel safe in the area as they can be attacked anytime at their homes, shops or offices without the help of the police since they (the police) have been directly attacked at their station to the extent of killing one.
One resident said “It’s something that we are scared of; we can’t even go out after 9 pm because we are scared now. If they can break into a whole police station to attack police to the extent of killing one, then how more we innocent people walking around”.
Another resident also speaking to GhanaWeb said, “it’s very obvious that we are not safe; if they could shoot a policeman, then they can shoot any other person because I don’t have a gun. It’s very possible”.
The people of Kwabenya are therefore calling on the Inspector General of Police and government to help beef up security in the area by deploying armed security men who will always patrol the place 24/7.
But the Deputy Interior Minister, Henry Quartey speaking to the media assured residents of their safety saying they shouldn’t be scared as the police will do everything to secure their safety.
He further indicated that Ghana’s security has not broken down in spite of recent attacks on some police officers in the country and plans are far-advanced to resource the Ghana Police Service with adequate logistics to enable them fight crime comprehensively.
Gunmen numbering about six attacked the Kwabenya District Police Station around 1:30 am Sunday dawn shooting and killing a monitoring inspector, Emmanuel Asilevi, and freeing seven suspects from the station.
The Accra Regional Police Command is on the look-out for the unknown robbers who attacked the station and the seven suspects who were released during the attack.
