A shocking scandal has unfolded in the Bosomefreho Constituency of the Ashanti Region, where over 5000 fertilizers meant to support farmers affected by the severe dry spell have gone missing.

The fertilizers, which were part of the NPP government’s measures to mitigate the effects of the dry spell on farmers and the food system, were allegedly given to some members of the then-governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency to be shared among farmers.

However, investigations by OTEC News Reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng revealed that the fertilizers never reached the intended beneficiaries.

Instead, some NPP stalwarts in the area sold part of the fertilizers, while the rest were looted by grassroots party members.

The dry spell, which lasted from mid-June to mid-August 2024, significantly impacted grain production and the food system, leading to a decline in crop yields and a rise in food prices.

The government had announced measures to support farmers, including the distribution of fertilizers and seeds to 800,000 smallholder farmers. Each farmer was supposed to receive 2 bags of NPK, 1 bag of Urea, and maize or rice seeds.

The disappearance of the fertilizers in the Bosomefreho Constituency has raised concerns about the mismanagement of government resources and the lack of accountability in the distribution of support to farmers.

Former DCE's Confirmation

Kofi Adu Amoateng , the immediate past District Chief Executive Officer, has confirmed that the constituency received fertilizers from the government, but they were handed over to the NPP leadership.

According to Amoah, the Assembly was not involved in the process, and as a result, they have no information on the number of fertilizers received or how they went missing.

Source from Ministry of Agric

A reliable source at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture branch in the Bosomefreho District corroborated Amoateng's statement, stating that the fertilizers were dispatched to the area but were not distributed through official channels.

Instead, they were received by some NPP members and stored outside the Ministry's jurisdiction.

The source further revealed that they witnessed individuals suspected to be NPP members offloading the fertilizers from storage but were powerless to act since the fertilizers were officially given to party members.
