Fetu Afahye celebrations to kick start on July 31

The Adontenhen of Oguaa traditional area, Nana Kwamena Nyinfa II on Wednesday announced that the chiefs and people of the Oguaa traditional area would commence this year’s Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebrations on July 31 with a ban on drumming and noise making as well as fishing in the Fosu lagoon.

He said the festival would be climaxed with a durbar of chiefs, Asafo companies, and crowning of Miss Fetu Afahye on September 1, 2012.

Nana Nyinfa made this known during the Fetu Afahye planning committee meeting held on Wednesday at the Emintsimadze palace in Cape Coast to deliberate on the programme of activities for the Fetu Afahye celebration.

He said a health and sanitation day would be held on Saturday August 15, alongside the lifting of the ban on drumming and noise making.

He said on August 26, a competitive choral concert amongst various choir groups would be held at the palace in honor of the late Osabarima Kodwo Mbrah V of Oguaaman, who loved music so much and was also a patron for some choir groups in the area.

Nana Nyinfa II said, on August 27, a colloquium would be held for the youth at the palace as well as a masquerading competition, which would be climaxed with the “Akom’s Night” at the Fosu Lagoon Shrine.

The Adontenhen said the Bakatue (regatta) which is performed to lift the ban on fishing in the Fosu Lagoon would be held on August 28, whilst a children and women’s day would be held on August 30 at Top Yard Cinema Hall, and Ato Austin Memorial Garden respectively, with a vigil at the Nana “Paprata” shrine in Cape Coast.

On August 31, he said the chiefs and people of Oguaaman would hold a ceremony at the Cape Coast Chapel Square, during which purification rites on the land would be performed.

On September 2, an inter-denominational thanksgiving service would be held, followed by sporting activities at the Victoria Park in Cape Coast with the lifting of ban on funerals on September 3.**
