Filth engulfs Tema Station

Accra, Dec. 18, GNA - Mr. Pattterson Asare, Welfare Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at the Tema Station in Accra on Tuesday called on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to clear the heap of rubbish that had once again engulfed the place after the traders returned just after the decongestion exercise.

Speaking to the GNA, Mr Asare said his outfit had received a lot of complaints from the public about the dangerous effects of the rubbish on human health.

He said the station had appealed to the Waste Management Department of AMA for the release of their vehicles for the removal of the rubbish since they were willing to provide fuel, but that request had not received any favourable response.

The Secretary said sometimes, some traders burnt the rubbish with the hope of getting rid of it but all to no avail. He said before the decongestion exercise at the station they were provided with 20 bins by Zommlion, a waste collection company, but since they could not be used due to the exercise the company had since come back for their bins.

He said that had added compounded the sanitation problem at the station.
