Takoradi, Aug. 16, GNA – The Acting Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Brig. John Guyiri has called on the personnel of the Service to regularly engage in fitness exercises to enable them build their stamina for the conduct of their work schedules.
He said in fighting undesirable fires, one pre-requisite stood tall and that was the physical fitness of the fire fighter.
Brigadier Guyiri was speaking at the third biennial Chief Fire Officer’s sports competition at the Ghana Secondary Technical School in Takoradi on Wednesday in the Western Region.
The competition brought together competitors from all the ten regions to contest for trophies in various disciplines including soccer, tug of war, cross-country, athletics, volley ball and table tennis.
The acting Chief Fire Officer said that the event was preceded by a zonal competition in June and July under the Northern, Middle and Southern zones to select worthy athletes.
Brigadier Guyiri said that the Service was duty bound to institute the participation of sports and recreation for the men and women of the Service to ensure that they performed their responsibilities creditably.
ACFO Obeng Dankwa Dwamena, Western Regional Fire Officer said the competition aims at also reducing stress among fire fighters, adding that fun and excitement were necessary to put the personnel in good shape to undertake their duties.
He urged the participating personnel from the Regions to give off their best in order to raise the sporting profile of the Service to confidently participate in the upcoming SESSA Games.
