Fire burns down 25 rooms at Ashaiman

Ashaiman,(GAR) Jan. 16, GNA - Tragedy struck Ashaiman on Saturday morning when fire razed down twenty-five rooms destroying personal effects and other properties worth millions of cedis.

There were no casualties and the cause of the fire is not yet known. All the occupants of the 25 wooden structures in the area behind the Ashaiman central market were not present to retrieve some of their items.

Madam Linda Arkhurst, Deputy Group Fire Officer of the Tema Municipal Fire Office told the GNA on Sunday that at 11.14 am on Saturday, the office received a telephone call from its sub-station at Ashaiman requesting for assistance to put out fire that had swept through a wooden structure in the area.

She said due to the severity of the fire more firemen were called in from the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) but they had only a fire tender which was a stand by for the plant so it could not be released. The other had broken down.

They eventually called in firemen from the Nungua fire station who assisted their colleagues from Tema and Ashaiman to put out the fire but unfortunately every item had been burnt.

Madam Arkhurst said investigations are continuing to know the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, the occupants are putting up with friends and relatives.
