Fire guts Walewale Senior High School block

Walewale (NR), Oct. 27, GNA - Fire on Friday morning razed through the girls' dormitory block of the Walewale Senior High School in the West Mamprusi District destroying the entire property, including learning aids of more than 50 students. The cause of the fire is still not known but it was believed to be an electrical fault.

Hajia Alimatu Mahama, Assistant Headmistress in charge of administration told the GNA in Walewale on Friday after the havoc that the fire had disrupted academic work and brought untold hardship to students.

She said the fire, which started at about 0900 hours, completely razed down six dormitories and destroyed all school beds, mattresses and the students' property running into millions of cedis. No one was hurt.

Hajia Mahama said the male students climbed the roofs and removed the sink of other dormitories, which saved the fire from causing further damage before personnel from the Fire Service came to put the fire under control.

Currently, some 60 students were staying in other dormitories without adequate clothing, books and other personal belongings and creating more congestion in the dormitories. Hajia Mahama appealed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET Fund) and the West Mamprusi District Assembly to intervene immediately to assist the school and the affected students for academic work to continue.
