Boat owners and fishermen at Yeji in the Brong Ahafo Region have served notice that they will suspend operations on the Volta Lake in 48 hours to protest unfair pricing and distribution of premix fuel in the area.
A letter addressed to the National Premix Fuel Secretariat by the boat owners’ highlighted their grievances as the formation of landing beaches, price of premix fuel and quantity of premix fuel being supplied them.
They said in the letter that boat owners and fishermen are not part of landing beaches and per the law, they are supposed to play a part in these groups, and as a result, they want to be part of the group.
On premix fuel, they said premix fuel is supposed to be given directly to boat owners and fishermen and but there are middlemen who buy the premix fuel and increase the price which makes it difficult for them to afford.
They said the price is supposed to be 8 cedis, but middlemen sell it between 15 & 18 cedis, which makes it difficult for them to buy as much which is affecting their operations.
Starr News couldn’t make contact with the national premix fuel secretariat but spoke to the Brong-Ahafo regional minister who promised to contact the DCE for the area for briefing and subsequently clarification.
