Fix EC brawl - AFAG to Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo President Akufo-Addo

Pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) is demanding immediate action from the Presidency on the fallouts from the EC.

According to the group, affiliated to the ruling government, President Akufo-Addo must within a week set up a commission of inquiry to ascertain the merits or otherwise of the barrage of allegations against commissioners of the EC.

AFAG’s calls come on the back of a string of accusations and counter accusations that have engulfed the commission over the last one week.
The country’s electoral management body has dominated headlines lately following a petition demanding for the removal of its chairperson Mrs Charlotte Osei for various alleged breaches. The petition alleged that Mrs. Osei among other things expended over GHS4 million on her residence.

But, in a blistering rebuttal to the allegations totaling 27, Mrs. Osei took her three deputies to the cleaners accusing them of gross insubordination, corruption and arrogance. This was after she labelled the allegations as frivolous and the product of an “overactive evil imagination” in an earlier tirade.

These allegations and counter allegations, according to a CDD governing member Prof. Agyemang-Duah, blemish the integrity of all the three commissioners.

As a result, the pressure group maintains unravelling the truths in the raging controversy at the commission will restore its credibility and public confidence.

Addressing a press conference Tuesday, July 25, 2017 the General Secretary of AFAG, Anold Kwaku Boateng said the nature of the impasse cannot end with the removal or otherwise of the commission’s chairperson.

“As a sacred democratic institution, AFAG is by this press conference calling on the president to set up a commission of inquiry into the entire affairs of the EC. There is no doubt that this raging controversies at the EC generated huge public interest which requires a presidential commission of inquiry,” he stated.

According to him, it is the believe of the group that with the establishment of the said commission the truth surrounding the allegations and counter allegations will be unearthed restoring “credibility and public confidence” in the commission.
