Takoradi and its surroundings in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis of the Western region saw massive flooding Thursday, April 07, 2016 after nearly three hours of torrential rainfall.
The flood broke into people’s homes, stores and offices, destroying properties and leaving many sleepless nights.
Most of the areas affected were at the central business district (CBD) and surrounding communities.
A visit to Essikafo-Ambanten No. 2, a suburb of Takoradi, revealed the entire community was flooded as the deluge invaded homes.
Today can confirm that about four vehicles were towed from their parking places by the flood currents, but were eventually blocked by some structures.
Some walls were razed down by the flood whereas properties like television sets, home theatres, mattresses, carpets and sofas were seen floating on water.
Our findings revealed that the Essikafo-Ambanten No. 2 community was the point of convergence for all drains before they empty into the sea.
One of the affected residents who spoke to this reporter, Ama Donkor, intimated that but for their presence their ten month-old baby would have been drowned to death.
According to her, the water level in her room was up to the knee level and they had to use buckets to draw off the water.
“Everything in my room was soaked in the water while I watched helplessly because the house and the entire compound had been flooded,” he narrated.
According to her, the drains had been choked with garbage and blamed the city authorities who have failed to pay heed to their call to desilt the drains, especially the big ones, which cannot be desilted manually.
She, therefore, called on the authorities to come to their aid to avoid any unforeseen future mishap, especially as the rainy season is about to set in.
