Focus on your office and refrain from engaging in ministerial overreach – Minority to A-G

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Ayine Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Ayine

The Minority in Parliament has accused Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, of overstepping his authority and urged him to focus on his constitutional mandate.

The call comes amid a dispute over Dr Ayine’s defense of national security officials criticized by the Minority Leader for their role in a controversial search at the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison.

“We call on the Attorney General to refrain from this ministerial overreach, concentrate on his office, and stop issuing threats of defamation suits against MPs who are just doing their constitutional oversight duty,” MP for Suame, John Darko, told a press conference by his Caucus on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

The Minority contends that Dr. Ayine wrongly claimed oversight of national security staff, who were reassigned to the Minister of the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, by presidential directive on March 7, 2025.

“Is the Attorney General suggesting that the national security staff are his staff? The Minority Leader criticized the actions of national security personnel, who do not work for the Attorney General. He should be reminded that on March 7, 2025, the President assigned ministerial responsibility for national security to the Minister of the Interior. Therefore, the person currently overseeing national security is the Honorable Muntaka, not the Honorable Attorney General, Dr. Ayine. So why is the Attorney General overreaching his ministerial responsibility by claiming that the national security staff are his, and that the Minority Leader’s criticism of their actions constitutes an attack on his staff?” he questioned.

The background to this spat lies in Dr Ayine’s March 24 press conference, where he responded to the Minority’s allegations of unprofessional conduct during the raid.

The Minority at a press conference addressed last week by their leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused the national security officials of allegedly stealing cash and items from the residence of Dr Addison during a search which the Caucus has labelled as a raid.

But according to the Attorney General, the search was lawfully sanctioned and conducted within the confines of the law.
