Foreign doctors rescue Ghana

Ho, Sept. 5, GNA - The presence of foreign doctors, mainly Cubans, has helped to avert a chaotic situation at hospitals in the Ho municipality as a result of the nationwide doctors' strike action which is now in its fourth day.

Mr Alex Amenu, Administrator at the Volta Regional Hospital told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday "the situation does not seem to be alarming".

He said four foreign doctors; an Egyptian, two Cubans and an Indian were at post attending to outpatients while the striking local doctors handled in-patients as promised.

"The local doctors are flexible and at hand helping when they have to, Mr Amenu said.

At the Municipal hospital, two Nursing Officers told the GNA that a Cuban doctor had been taking care of the outpatients while the nurses gave others first aid before referring them when necessary. Relatives accompanying some outpatients who were brought in from outside the municipality told the GNA that they were not aware of the doctors' strike.
