Former ADISCO student arrested for exam malpractice

Cape Coast, Oct. 10, GNA - A former student of the Adisadel College, Francis Kojo Mensah was on Saturday arrested and handed over to the police for allegedly writing the English paper for another candidate, at the on-going SSSCE examinations for private candidates, at the Adisadel College Examination Centre. Mensah, was reported to have answered the paper for one Morgan Hammond, and later swapped answer sheets with him, but were spotted by the invigilator, who alerted the security personnel present, but Hammond managed to escape.

Mr Nii Omani Quaye, Central Regional branch controller of the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), who made this known to the GNA in an interview at Cape Coast on Monday, said Mensah was helping the police to locate Hammond. He also expressed concern about the use of mobile phones within the examinations halls and warned that mobile phones were not part of examination materials, and no candidate, or the supervisors and invigilators were also not allowed to bring them in.

According to him, some of the candidates were taking undue advantage of the initial problems associated with the examinations, and were "playing all kinds of tricks, but gave the assurance that everything was now under control and that the council would not spare anyone caught indulging in any form of malpractice.

Mr Quaye said the council had put the necessary structures in place to curtail any malpractices and warned students to desist from them, "and just go to their examination centres as candidates to write their exams and move away peacefully". When the police were contacted they confirmed the story.
