Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has excluded the current Minister for Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, and former sports minister Kwame Assiamah from his all-time list of Best Sports Ministers in Ghana.

In an interview with Oyerepa FM, Afriyie named three former ministers as the best-performing sports ministers in Ghana’s history. The list included the current MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo, and former sports minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah.

According to Afriyie, these individuals significantly advanced sports and football in the country during their tenure.

“I’ve seen lots of ministers during my time in Ghana football, and those who have helped football and sports are Osafo-Maafo, the most critiqued Elvis Afriyie Ankrah—because I was the only person within the football association to defend him since day one—and Mahama Ayariga during my tenure as Vice President,” he said.

Afriyie also claimed that, despite their contributions, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah and Mahama Ayariga, both members of the NDC, would likely decline the opportunity to serve as Sports Ministers again.

“I can tell you that the two people within the NDC will not want to be Sports Ministers any longer. What Elvis went through will make him decline the offer from President-elect John Dramani Mahama,” he added.

George Afriyie was appointed Vice President of the GFA in November 2015 and served under then-GFA President Kwasi Nyantakyi until June 2018.
