Former Members of Parliament of the ruling National Democratic Congress in the first Parliament of the Fourth Republic on Friday pledged their total commitment to President John Dramani Mahama to win Election 2012.
“We unreservedly are committed to the NDC...acknowledge the challenges going on but are ready to work towards strengthening the party to retain power and will not entertain any attempt to divide the front of the party.
“We pledged to work from all front to ensure that President Mahama wins Election 2012...We are mobilising and working with cadres to hit the grassroots to propagate the party’s achievement and counter opposition propaganda,” Dr Ebenezer A. Ayirebi-Acquah, Chairman of the former MPs caucus said in a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
He said: “It is both significant and important to note that we as former NDC MPs see ourselves as being involved in history-making and also as active participants in the evolution of the 4th Republic.
“The painful demise of our late President John Evans Atta Mills and the assumption of office of our current President Mahama are all historic events [that] have stirred us up to work tirelessly for the NDC to win power in honour of our late Leader.”
The former MPs assured the party leadership of their readiness to contribute to strengthening the party through the use of their maturity, experience and huge local and national public image to work towards holding the NDC together.
“We believe our active involvement in the campaign will stabilize and strengthen the party and finally enhance our chances of winning, notwithstanding the fact that our Candidate is already marketed and is very popular”.
The Former NDC MPs called for conceited efforts towards the December polls stressing that; “We cannot fight on too many fronts within the next 60 days and succeed to retain political power.
“We must all bury our internal differences and work towards the broader objective.”
The Group expressed concern about developments in the Party that seem to undermine unity and peace and urged the Council of Elders to step in to find an amicable settlement.
"The state of the Party now requires the fullest cooperation of all members, including the members of the National Executive Committee, Parliamentarians and the rank and file of the Party.
"In our considered opinion, differences within the Party must be resolved within the Party using the relevant organs and structures prescribed by the Party's constitution. It is highly unacceptable for bodies or groups within the Party to trade accusations in the public domain when acceptable methods are available to be exploited," the statement said.
The group reminded officers and non-officers of the NDC that their actions must serve to promote unity and peace and not create disharmony, adding "the press war must cease forthwith".
The Former NDC MPs said they are committed to building a strong and united party capable of retaining power in Election 2012.
