Each 'galamseyer' has at least four pump action guns - Minister details menace

The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, has provided insight into the activities of illegal miners (galamsey) and outlined some of the requirements needed to engage in these operations.

During a panel discussion with Kwame Sefa Kayi on galamsey on the September 5, 2024, edition of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show, Acheampong stated that a study conducted by his office indicates that illegal miners are essentially required to own pump-action guns, making them heavily armed for their operations.

“According to our research, any individual who wants to venture into the galamsey business must have at least 4 pump action guns as a basic requirement before you can be allowed to join. An individual can have more guns, but 4 is the minimum,” he said.

He added that the greedy nature of some Ghanaians, who want to become affluent quickly and at any cost, has also contributed to the galamsey problem.

“The citizens of this country have become so greedy for money that they believe success can only be achieved through wealth,” the minister noted.

The issue of galamsey operations has recently resurfaced after Ghana Water Limited expressed concerns about the poor condition of the Pra River, which has affected their ability to supply quality water to some parts of the Central Region.
