The former national women?s organiser of the National Democratic Congress, Frances Essiam, has announced her resignation from the party.
The decision follows an alleged assault on her yesterday by some party supporters at the on-going national delegates? congress in Koforidua.
The attack came after she had made, what some consider scathing remarks about the founder of the party, Jerry John Rawlings.
Miss Essiam?s comments were in response to Mr. Rawlings address to the delegates in which he said he would pray for her ?soul? and that of other leading members of the NDC with whom he has personal disagreements.
Miss Essiam who fled from the congress and returned to Accra told JOY News one delegate from Tamale started the attack on her.
?One girl known as Amina from Tamale came from nowhere and hit me on the left eye with a bottle of water. Earlier on, I had received a call that the former President and the Kpong Katamanso MP Nii Laryea Afotagbe had organised some people to attack me. I was told they were waiting for me in front of the hotel with ground pepper, acid, guns and horse whips. They used the horse whips in whipping my back. These hefty boys started bashing at me and slapping and knocking my head against the wall. I sought refuge behind a pillar because it was no joke?.
Miss Essiam said with the current state of affairs, she was better off out of the NDC.
?I?ve contributed so much to the NDC but if today they are vilifying me, I?ve made up my mind I?m not standing. I?ll do something worth while. I?ll go and do a PHD. That one no one can take it away from me?.
