Free TB and HIV testing for traders

Accra, Aug. 11, GNA - In commemoration of the annual World Tuberculosis (TB) Day which falls on August 11, six sub metros within the Accra Metropolis collectively organised a free TB and HIV Sensitisation and testing for traders at the Kaneshie Market Complex.

The sub metros comprising Kpeshie, Ablekuma, Ayawaso, Osu Klottey, Okaikwei, and Ashiedu Keteke tested about 400 traders as part of the exercise.

Addressing the traders, Madam Esther Doku, TB Coordinator at the Kaneshie Polyclinic, urged them to periodically go for check ups for early detection and treatment of the diseases.

"You should not wait to fall seriously sick before you visit the hospital. The earlier a disease is detected, the better your chances of being cured totally," she added.

Madam Doku cited fever, profuse sweating and coughing for more than two weeks as some of the symptoms of TB and urged all who exhibited such symptoms to check for TB since both testing and treatment were free.

She noted that since TB was contagious, people who had it should endeavour to cover their mouths when sneezing and should not spit indiscriminately to prevent the spread of the disease.
