The Dansoman Community Library has launched a friendship club to attract philanthropists to support its cause to make libraries the social and intellectual centres of communities.
The event coincided with the first anniversary of the Library Readers’ Club and Awards Ceremony to honour individuals and organizations who assist the Library.
The Readers’ Club has about 300 members, who are registered with the Community Library.
Ms Stella Mensah, the Librarian, said the club offered a platform for the members to discuss ideas they find in books and also to share ideas on topical issues.
The members also undertake trips to places they read about to appreciate better their knowledge.
Ms Mensah thanked the benefactors of the Library for their invaluable support.
Mr Ateks Ebbe, a resident of Dansoman, but based in the United Kingdom, said reading was very critical in the formative years of the child because it aided its development.
Mr Ebbe, who is a major contributor to the library said children could perform better in school when they cultivated the habit of reading and encouraged them to patronize the libraries in their communities.
He appealed to residents of Dansoman and beyond to support the library either in kind or cash to improve the stock of books and the facilities.
Mr Kafui Prebbie, Chief Executive Officer of Tech Aide, said NGOs must partner the Government to improve upon libraries in Ghana.
The Dansoman Community Library was established in 1975.
