From the humble town of Assin Fosu, Ghana, to the bright lights of New York City, Betty Danquah-Smith, a renowned Immigration Attorney with a Master of Laws Degree in Energy and Environmental Law, has shattered barriers and inspired countless young black women worldwide.

In an interview with starrfm.com.gh, she recounted her career journey, noting that the path was unexpected, driven by her father's wish.

However, after her first year in law school, she discovered a passion that propelled her to greatness.

With an impressive educational background, including an LLB from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, a Barrister at Law from the Ghana School of Law, and an LLM from UC Berkeley, she has bridged continents in pursuit of legal excellence.

“It has been a hell of a journey, but God is good. He has seen us through it. I’m a math’s girl, and getting into law to start with sometimes baffles my mates and myself because law wasn’t part of my thing,” she narrated.

Betty, an alumna of Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School in Saltpond, was called to the Ghana Bar in 2015 and served as an Assistant State Attorney before expanding her practice to the United States.

She was called to the New York Bar in 2022 and the US Federal Court in the Southern District of New York, showcasing her ambition and adaptability.

As the Founder and Senior Partner of Smithlaw Pllc, she focuses on family-based immigration, reuniting families, and positioning herself at the forefront of contemporary legal discourse.

The power of good company and positive influences

She stressed the significance of surrounding oneself with good company and positive influences, acknowledging their profound impact on one's journey.

She encouraged the youth to seek out supportive communities and nurturing environments that foster growth and empowerment.

“I’ll just say they should relax because sometimes you get confused growing up, we all did. We were all confused at a point in time, but a day at a time will do,” she stated.
