With the increasingly diverse perspectives of electorates on the role and functions of Members of Parliament, the Political Science department of the University of Ghana with funding from the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung foundation has conducted a research which has unearthed the various views constituents hold about their Members of Parliament.

The research titled Assessment of 275 Members of Parliament – Perspectives from the Constituencies was carried out in all the 275 constituencies in the country with 27,500 respondents, 100 each from the constituencies.

Per the findings of the research, only 95 incumbent MPs would retain their seats if elections were held today. Statistically, 49 percent of Ghanaians in the 275 constituencies across the country indicated that they would vote for their incumbent Member of Parliament should the elections be held today, whereas 42.6 percent responded negative and 7.9 percent remained undecided.

The findings also showed that NPP MPs have not been involved in disseminating information about government’s flagship programmes specifically ‘One District One Factory’ and ‘One Village One Dam’.

When asked if MPs promised development projects in their campaign manifestos, 88.7% said yes while 11.3% said no.

The research amongst other things also revealed that 52.3% of respondents were not satisfied with the performance of the parliamentarians.

The findings of the research were presented on Monday, June 10, 2019, at the University of Ghana Law Faculty by Senior lecturers, Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah and Dr. Alexander Kaakyire Frempong.
