Funding of NHIS will not affect pension - Issah

Mr Abudulai Issah, Adansi West District Manager of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has assured workers of the Ghana Education Service (GES) that the two-and-a-half percent deduction from their contributions to fund the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) would not affect their pensions.

He said SSNIT had for a long time considered how to improve upon the health status of contributors and if the government in its wisdom was introducing a scheme to enable workers to have easy access to health, it should be welcomed.

Mr Abudulai was speaking at a forum organised for the workers of the Ghana Education Service at New Edubiase in the Adansi East District on Friday.

The forum was to educate teachers on the need to join the SSNIT pension scheme instead of agitating for the return of the CAP 30 and to highlight the importance of government using two-and-a-half percent of their contribution to fund the NHIS.

He asked teachers to encourage other self-employed persons in their communities to register with the SSNIT and also urged contributors to visit SSNIT offices regularly to check their balances to know whether their contributions were being paid.

Mr Abudulai appealed to the various workers organisations like the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and others not to politicise the NHIS but give it a chance to succeed.
