Funeral turns tragic at Agbozume

Agbozume (V/R), May 3, GNA - What was to be a normal funeral last Tuesday at Nyomikope, a village near Agbozume in the Ketu South District, turned tragic when a mourner was beaten to death by three others following a quarrel over a drum.

The deceased, Kwabla Mileba, 43, was a porter at the commercial lorry station at Aflao, while the three suspects namely, Adewale Sosu, 32, Kofi-Korkor Bruce, 35 and Lumorvi Gbeti, 64, are farmers from the Agbozume area.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvester Kudolo, Agbozume District Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that on April 29, this year, members of the community, including the deceased, gathered at Nyomikope for a burial ceremony.

He said in the evening when the funeral had almost ended, one Nyemedinyao Mileba, a brother of the deceased, took a personal drum he had taken to the funeral and was on his way home when the suspects, led by Gbeti, tried to prevent him from doing so.

ASP Kudolo said Nyemedinyao sent the drum home but while returning to the funeral grounds, the suspects attacked him and the deceased, who had joined in the scuffle in aid of his brother.

He said the suspects overpowered the two brothers, with Adewale pushing the deceased down and hitting him repeatedly while Gbeti boasted that he and his accomplices were ready to kill the two and face the consequences.

ASP Kudolo said as the deceased became unconscious, Nyemedinyao rushed to report the incident to the Agbozume Police who returned with him to the spot and found him dead. He said the three suspects who are currently in police custody would soon be put before court on a provisional charge of murder while investigations continued.
